The 2010 SA Variety Bash launch was held on 26 February at Next Generation function centre, where 180 Bashers enjoyed fabulous food and drinks looking over the River Torrens. Staying in theme – this year’s ‘Mallee to the Valley’ route will see plenty of water, starting on 14 August at SA’s largest waterway, the Murray River. The Bash will arrive eight days later in the stunning Clare Valley. Entrants are pleased to be staying much closer to home this year and enjoying some private tracks around our State thanks to the generosity of station owners. Check the website for complete route information and snippets of the 2010 event.

A big highlight on the night was the appeal presentation to Nathan Clarke, a true account of how children like Nathan benefit from Variety and the hard earned funds raised by our Bash entrants.

Nathan is seventeen years old, and has cerebral palsy.  He has a powered wheelchair and a manual wheelchair; however the current family vehicle could not accommodate his powered wheelchair.  This meant that Nathan was reliant on using access cabs, or having a carer with him at all times to assist with his manual chair.

Variety sourced a second hand vehicle modified for his powered wheelchair that allows him more independence and access to a far wider range of social and sporting activities.

What is the Bash?

Bash 08 (196).jpgBashing was created in 1985 by adventurer Dick Smith, when he took a group of friends for a drive he called “The Bourke to Burketown Bash".

The Bash is an eight day drive in the country with your mates. It is NOT a race or rally, it is a madcap event designed to put the fun into fundraising. Vehicles must be in standard condition and shall be models constructed prior to 1980s (although run-on models will be accepted). The drivers and crews, however, are anything but standard issue with most Bashers taking the one major rule (don't take it too seriously) seriously. Read More...

Herbie photoAN INSIGHT INTO THE BASH:
Quotes from our winning Virgin Teams over the Past Five Years

05 Car Pals  “We think the Bash was best summed up by the quote ‘we have to
be what others expect us to be for 51 weeks of the year.  We get to be ourselves on the Bash for the other week’.  It is very hard to describe to someone who hasn’t been lucky enough to experience it.”

06 Car SEM “People ask us what the Bash was like and we simply say you just can’t explain it, you just have to get organized and do it.  We had eight days of amazing sights and even more amazing people.”

07 Car 747  “The year leading up to your first Bash is taken up by many different things.  Building the car, raising money, fine tuning the theme, making sure you have the right songs on your iPod, and so on, but it’s not until you see the kids and parents of whom the appeals and donation really help, that your priorities change.”

08 The Kombvicts  “With Bashing in our blood as the nephews of the Cappuccino Bros (1989 Car 15) we wanted to follow in their footsteps and experience what the Bash has to offer its Bashers. No one told us what to expect, you will also have to experience it for yourselves. All we will say is that we know you will be back.”

09  The Herbies  “ The most amazing week of our lives which of course had nothing to do with winning not only the Best Virgin team but also Herbie taking out the Best Presented Vehicle. To have so much fun while doing so much good for kids was beyond belief”
