2011 Variety 4WD Challenge - 26 March - 1 April 2011
From alpine slopes, snow gums and bushranger country in 2010, to areas with rainfall only slightly more than the Sahara in 2011.
Our journey begins at Leigh Creek, a small coal mining town in the Northern Flinders Ranges and travels northwards to the Warburton Crossing and on to a night in the desert at Poeppels Corner. Day 3 will see us heading east over Big Red , the most famous of the 1113 sand dunes in the Simpson Desert, to Birdsville where we will spend two nights, heading north to Cacoory Waterhole and back.
Birdsville began life as 'Diamantina Crossing' in 1881 and was given its present name in 1885. It is probably best known for the annual Birdsville Races.
From here we will head east into the spectacular Channel Country and through Planet Downs and Noccundra with our final night celebration in Broken Hill.
The 2011 SA Variety 4WD Challenge – an adventure not to be missed!

2010 4WD Challenge - The Victorian High Country
The sixteenth 4WD Challenge departed Sale on 20 March 2010 and spent the next seven days in the spectacular Victorian High Country renowned for its breathtaking alpine scenery, mountain huts, picturesque townships and gorgeous panoramic views over fertile river valleys. The contingent of 110 people declared it was arguably the most white knuckle drive in the event’s history.
The entrants enjoyed amazing meals, great entertainment and award winning wines at the nightly sunset parties, which all contributed to the success of the event
The 2010 Variety SA 4WD Challenge raised just under $450,000 for children in need in South Australia and we are hopeful to raising even more on the 2011 event.
What is the 4WD Challenge?
The 4WD Challenge is Variety SA's second highest fundraiser behind our flagship event, the Variety Bash, raising $3.44 million net for ‘special’ children since its inception. It is a seven day outback adventure taking 4WD vehicles and their owners off the bitumen and into the outback, but doing it in style. The emphasis is on good tracks, fabulous scenery, great food and wine and of course, fun and entertainment.
As with all Variety events, safety is a major consideration. Our experienced outback team includes a medical team, mechanics, 4WD experts, a fully set up radio communications vehicle, satellite phones and an aircraft. The Challenge caters for both the experienced and inexperienced four wheel drive enthusiasts with options to take an easier track on the more difficult terrain. If you are looking for a seven day outback adventure with all the excitement of serious 4WD driving, with a group of fun loving like-minded people then consider Variety’s 4WD Challenge. The event is ideally suited to husband and wife teams, but mates with their mates (male or female of course, most welcome.
The fee to enter the event, payable by the crew of two is $550 including GST. Entrants should then seek donations or sponsorship to Variety from third parties to a minimum of $6500. Alternatively entrants may choose to make voluntary contributions up to, or more than, $6500 personally. A provisions fee is payable that covers all meals, entertainment, merchandise and nightly sunset parties.
Chairman's Message
Scott Limbert
2010 4WD Chairman
Wendy and I are absolutely thrilled to be leading the Variety 4WD Challenge for our third year. Our only trepidation is how we will top last year!!
Still we have some great ideas, with maps and information being pulled from near and far. Our first survey is at the end of August and we will be travelling to places that we have never been before, with a couple of familiar spots thrown in the mix. We are heading north, travelling through three states and are hopeful of two nights in one spot. There will be sand, the sun will be shining and of course we will be back with those pesky little black things!
We are looking forward to carrying out our first survey with Karen and Greg as OVZ, and I’m sure their enthusiasm as the “newbies” will bring another great element to our wonderful event.
We also welcome John and Jan Beasley as committee members and look forward to their input to our ever evolving event; it is great to have them on board.
Variety is incredibly indebted to our Challenge Sponsors, many of whom have been with us for the life of the event. Without their support, the event would not have grown to the success it has. We have had great feedback from our sponsors regarding the support they have received from you and your circle of family and friends and we know you will continue to support them at every opportunity.
To you our Challengers, your committee is totally committed to ensuring the 2011 event is another extremely memorable life experience for you all.
We are all here for the same reasons; to experience our wonderful country in a very rare manner; to have a wonderful time doing it and to make a difference to the lives of our special children.
